Cats are big eaters but usually don’t drink enough.
As a result, many suffer from urinary problems. Studies indicate that around 19 million European cats (around 15% of the total) suffer from urinary system disorders, making it one of the main reasons for which cat parents consult a veterinarian.
There are 3 major causes of lower urinary tract diseases in cats: feline idiopathic cystitis (approximately 60% of cases), urinary stones (20%) and urethral plugs (15%).
Feline idiopathic cystitis, the most common cause of urinary problems, is often linked to stress:
1. Cats are very sensitive to changes and certain causes which may seem trivial to you are likely to disrupt the emotional state of your cat: arrival of a new animal, road works, unusual absence, birth of a child, moving houses, going on vacation, etc.
Environmental stress increases the stimulation of your cat’s bladder.
2. This stimulation of the bladder promotes inflammation of the bladder wall which generates pain. As a result, a message is transmitted to the brain, which again generates stress.
As a first step, it is therefore necessary to break the cycle of stress to combat some of the urinary problems.
